Auckland Latter-day Saint Women and New Zealand Red Cross Seek to Aid Refugees

In an organized charitable effort, women from the Penrose Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently joined hands to bless many refugees’ lives.

In a short, two-hour time span, they were able to package 35 larges boxes of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and shoes, including brand new socks and underclothing for the benefit of those in need.

The effort was part of an international initiative to alleviate the stress and despair felt by refugees around the world. The women’s auxiliary organization of the worldwide Church, The Relief Society, has invited its 6 million-plus members to engage in service projects entitled “I Was a Stanger.”

A stake is a Mormon term for a group of congregations in a geographical area, similar to a diocese in other Christian churches.

The Penrose Stake Relief Society presidency, led by Mrs Rossina Kruger, organised the clothing drive by inviting the sisters and others to donate pre-loved clothing for the benefit of refugees who are in great need.

“I’m totally amazed that people still want to come in and contribute, truly an awesome feeling of love and care for those in need,” Mrs Kruger said.

The effort was planned in response to a clarion call from worldwide Church leaders to help those in distress. This activity is the first of many projects planned for the Penrose sisters.

Sister Kruger stated that the clothing drive: “Is an opportunity to bless the lives of others who are not able to receive the blessings we have in living in this great country. I am so grateful that many of our sisters were able to donate.”
